Gaps and Indeterminacy. Wolfgang Iser’s Phenomenology of Reading
» Scholé 2/2011, pp. 71-95In this paper I wish to achieve, besides the incursion in Wolfgang Iser's phenomenology of reading, an overview of the problem of indeterminacy and its central structures: gaps, negation and negativity. You will find analyzed Wolgang's Iser theory on indeterminacy and some arguments about the indeterminacies and the work of art's concretization in Roman Ingarden. Iser begins his presentation about indeterminacy with a review of Ingarden's vision on the places of indeterminacy. The purpose of the debates with Ingarden, according to Iser, is that it clarifies the different approach to the problem that interests both. From the indeterminacy concept starts the basic idea of Iser's phenomenology, which is that the literary work of art exists only through interacting with its readers. Indeterminacy is one of the defining characteristics of literature as it allows the reader access within the text. Due to the indetermination of literary texts, Iser's reader is active, always filling ”gaps”, creating images and coherence, formulating the unformulated.
